Despite
how well you think you may know the world, the world
keeps stirring your curiosity. For every question
that’s answered by mankind, a thousand other
mysteries arise. Two images that have always
projected an aura of obscure awe are skulls and
crystals. So, it’s only natural that ancient models
of skulls made out of clear quartz, known as the
crystal skulls, possess an inexplicable intrigue
about them.
The
crystal skulls, speculated by many to be the
property of the ancient Mayan and Aztec
civilizations, are believed to be over 5000 years
old. Arguably, the most controversial crystal skull
in the world today is the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal
Skull, which was discovered by 17-yr-old Anna
Mitchell-Hedges in 1924, on an expedition trip with
her father F.A Mitchell-Hedges to investigate the
lost city of Atlantis. Despite being discounted by
many as a hoax, the Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull
grew in mystery when advanced crystal laboratories
concluded that it was so perfect it shouldn’t even
exist on earth.
As per
a Native American legend, there are 13 crystal
skulls deposited on earth from the 13 planets in the
universe inhabiting life. Each skull is said to have
a detachable jaw which would recount the past or
predict the future. According to the legend, when
the 13 skulls are united all of life’s problems
would be remedied.
Some
attach healing powers to the crystal skulls while
others claim they produce mysterious holographic
images. Another legend talks about how ancient
shamans used the crystal skull to will death upon
anyone they desired. The most popular theory about
the crystal skulls, considering their advanced
texture, is that it was brought to earth by
extraterrestrials. In the Indiana Jones novel
Indiana Jones and the Philosopher’s stone there is a
reference to the crystal skull that connotes an
extraterrestrial association. Perhaps, the upcoming
Indiana Jones
movies, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of
the Crystal Skull would shed more light on it.
